The Female Gaze

As an older woman myself I’ve become increasingly aware of how infrequently women of a certain age are portrayed in the arts.  I know that most women are uncomfortable having their photograph taken and are very critical of themselves.

With this project I set out to show the beauty of older women by concentrating my lens on the face to show all the joys, sadness, heartaches and richness of their lives.

Many of these women are my friends and we have listened to each other and shared our life stories.  Others I made a point of getting to know before photographing them.  My objective was to ensure that each woman felt at ease in front of my camera and proud of her portrait.
